What is Solution Focused Counseling?
Solution Focused Counseling is an evolving evidence-based approach. The power of Solution Focused Counseling lies in the fact that it makes use of the existing strengths, resources and coping skills of the client. It is a practical and brief counseling approach that concentrates on the here and now and looks towards the future.
How does it work?
Collaboration
Together, you and I will examine what you consider to be the challenge/problem for which you are seeking help at this time. By asking the right questions I hope to help you verbalise and get as clear as possible what you hope to achieve with coaching.
Identifying your coping skills
As mentioned before, the Solution-Focused approach makes use of the existing strengths and resources of the client. However, the client is not always aware of these coping skills. As your coach, I will help you to identify and consequently create an increased awareness regarding possible coping skills, which work for you in your specific situation. The underlying assumption of the Solution-Focused approach is that there are indeed problems or challenges in life but there are also exceptions to these problems. There might be brief moments when the problem is on the background and the person copes well. These brief moments are considered exceptions to the problem. These exceptions are actually coping skills that work but are not always evident to the client, simply because they are not amplified enough and put to effective use. As we go through the session, the method for discovering your coping skills will become clearer.
Tasks which help you to put your coping skills to use
While each case is different, there might be tasks in the form of homework assignments between sessions to help you become more aware of your strengths and improve your coping skills.
